Privacy Policy for Bright Sky
Last updated: March 5, 2026
Overview
Bright Sky is a Chrome extension that provides weather forecasts on your new tab page. This privacy policy explains how we handle your data.
Data Collection
Bright Sky collects the following data:
- Location Data: When you use the "Use my location" feature, the extension requests your device's location through the browser's geolocation API. This requires your explicit permission.
- Location Preferences: If you search for or select a location, the extension stores your selected location (latitude, longitude, and location name) locally on your device.
- User Preferences: The extension stores your temperature unit preference (Celsius/Fahrenheit) and measurement system (Metric/Imperial) locally on your device.
- Recent Locations: The extension may store a list of your recently viewed locations (up to 6) locally on your device for quick access.
Data Storage
All data collected by Bright Sky is stored locally on your device using your browser's localStorage. No data is transmitted to our servers or stored on external servers.
Data Usage
Location data is used solely to:
- Fetch weather forecasts from third-party weather APIs (Open-Meteo, Weather.gov, and OpenStreetMap Nominatim)
- Display weather information on your new tab page
- Remember your preferred location for future use
- Center the precipitation radar map on your location
Third-Party Services
Bright Sky uses the following third-party services to provide weather data and map imagery:
- Open-Meteo API (api.open-meteo.com) — Provides weather forecasts and air quality data
- OpenStreetMap Nominatim (nominatim.openstreetmap.org) — Provides location search and reverse geocoding
- Weather.gov API (api.weather.gov) — Provides weather alerts for US locations
- RainViewer (api.rainviewer.com, tilecache.rainviewer.com) — Provides animated precipitation radar tiles for the radar map. Your location coordinates are used to center the map view; no personal data is sent to RainViewer.
- CartoDB / CARTO (basemaps.cartocdn.com) — Provides base map tiles for the precipitation radar map. Tile requests include standard HTTP headers but no personally identifiable information.
When you use location-based features, your location coordinates are sent to these services to retrieve weather and map data. Please refer to their respective privacy policies for information on how they handle data:
Data Sharing
Bright Sky does not share, sell, or transmit your personal data to any third parties except as necessary to fetch weather data from the APIs listed above. We do not collect analytics, track users, or use any advertising services.
