Privacy Policy

Overview

Bright Sky is a Chrome extension and Website that provides weather forecasts on your new tab page. This privacy policy explains how we handle your data.

We do not collect personal data. Location data is used only to fetch weather and generate the AI weather summary. We don't collect analytics or track users.

Data

Bright Sky stores the following data locally on your device only:

  • Location Data — When you use "Use my location," the extension requests your device's location via the browser's geolocation API. This requires your explicit permission.
  • Location Preferences — If you search for or select a location, the extension stores the latitude, longitude, and location name locally only (cannot be viewed by us or anyone else).
  • User Preferences — Your temperature unit preference (°C / °F), measurement system (Metric / Imperial), and search engine choice are stored locally.
  • Recent Locations — Up to 6 recently viewed locations may be stored locally for quick access.

Data Storage

All data is stored on your device using the browser's localStorage API — a sandboxed storage area built into your browser that only this extension can read. No one else, including us, can access it. Your location name is transiently sent to our server to generate the AI weather summary but is never stored. No data is permanently stored on our servers or transmitted to external parties beyond what is required to fetch weather data.

Location data is used solely to:

  • Fetch weather forecasts from third-party weather APIs
  • Display weather information on your new tab page
  • Remember your preferred location for future sessions
  • Center the precipitation radar map on your location

Third-Party Services

To provide weather data and map imagery, Bright Sky communicates with the following services. Your location coordinates are shared with these providers only to retrieve relevant data:

  • Open-Meteo (api.open-meteo.com) — Weather forecasts and UV index data
  • OpenStreetMap Nominatim (nominatim.openstreetmap.org) — Location search and reverse geocoding
  • Weather.gov API (api.weather.gov) — Weather alerts for US locations
  • RainViewer (api.rainviewer.com, tilecache.rainviewer.com) — Animated precipitation radar tiles. No personal data is sent beyond map tile requests.
  • Bright Sky API (bright-sky.vercel.app) — Generates an AI-powered weather summary using your location's current conditions. No personally identifiable information is sent.
  • CartoDB / CARTO (basemaps.cartocdn.com) — Base map tiles. Tile requests include standard HTTP headers only — no personally identifiable information.

Please refer to their respective privacy policies for details:

Data Sharing

Data is transmitted to third parties only as needed to provide core functionality: weather and map providers for forecast and radar features and for the AI weather summary. We do not use analytics, user tracking, or advertising services of any kind.

Deleting Your Data

You can remove all stored data at any time by:

  • Uninstalling the extension — this deletes all locally stored data automatically
  • Clearing the extension's storage via your browser's extension management page

Permissions

Bright Sky requests the following browser permissions:

  • Host Permissions — Network access to the weather and map services listed above:
    • api.open-meteo.com
    • geocoding-api.open-meteo.com
    • nominatim.openstreetmap.org
    • api.weather.gov
    • api.rainviewer.com
    • tilecache.rainviewer.com
    • basemaps.cartocdn.com
    • bright-sky.vercel.app
  • Geolocation — Optional. Only requested when you choose "Use my location."
  • Search (optional) — Optional. Requested only if you enable the omnibox/address-bar search integration. Used solely to read your browser's default search engine so the extension can match it; no search queries are intercepted or stored by Bright Sky.

Children's Privacy

Bright Sky does not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you are a parent or guardian and believe your child has provided personal information, please contact us.
